Easy guide to woodworking for beginners

Being an engineer, I have the advantage of training in several 3D modeling software packages, so I was able to design and customize all of the furniture I’ve already built (this may or may not be true for you). Nevertheless you don’t need to be an engineer to learn about woodworking, here are some tips for learning this craft:

  • Start with simpler projects so you don’t get overwhelmed. Woodworking can be incredibly relaxing and very rewarding if you don’t get in over your head and stay safe.
  • Watch lots of Youtube videos. You can learn how to (theoretically) operate just about any piece of woodshop equipment on Youtube. Then go and try it.
  • If you want to get into it to see how many new skills and techniques you can learn, I’d invest in maybe a book or two like this.
  • If you’re more interested in building some of your own quality furniture and don’t care so much about all 108 joinery techniques, I’d search out simple, step-by-step illustrated projects online, and from there slowly work your way from simple to more advanced.

I’ve attached some of the projects I’ve done below, hopefully to inspire you to stick with it like I did. When I started I knew almost nothing, but through tons of reading, Youtube, online research I acquired enough of the right skills to build some pretty nice pieces and save thousands of dollars in the process.

Curved-front vanity table.
5-drawer dresser/changing table.

I’m working on a website intended to help people like you, who want to get into this hobby but don’t want to deal with the steep learning curve. My goal is to cut through all of the unnecessary technical junk and teach the craft in a simple, fun manner, so that anyone with the desire to learn won’t be held back by lack of experience or a small budget. Check it out by clicking here. I also try to include helpful videos, tips and tricks to make things easier, and some of the best hardware and tools to get you started if you are just starting to build up a collection of tools.
